19th Century Chinese Ox Blood Melon Jar
19th Century Chinese Ox Blood Melon Jar
This large 19th Century Chinese Ox Blood Melon Jar is even more impressive when in hand. It is hard to capture the variation of color around the mouth of the jar in a photograph. However, close inspection reveals hints of blue and green in the glaze. The inside of the jar is coated with a thick glaze. The lid is made of hardwood and is in excellent condition. It is a replacement lid but fits well on the jar.
The jar is approximately 12 inches tall and about 7 inches wide.
The jar has the chipped off glaze on the foot that is typical of ox blood glazed ceramics in the 19th century. There is also crazing which is consistent with age and use. There are scratches in one area that are impacted with debris. There also appears to be a firing flaw in the same area. The jar is in overall good condition and presents well.
